Week 4: Nuclear Power, Net Zero and the Green Recovery: Joe Rippon & Shekhar Sumit

A short lecture considering the role that nuclear power can play in reaching our 2050 net zero ambition. The discussion will consider the need for new nuclear builds, alongside renewable deployment, and the wider benefits of nuclear power. A Q&A session would hope to answer any questions around nuclear, and also help to identify new directions for the nuclear industry.

Week 5: The need and business case for atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Removal

Christoph Beuttler, ClimeWorks will outline the need for atmospheric carbon dioxide removal in view of the goals of the Paris Agreement. He will discuss the role of direct air capture, its scalability, policy needs and challenges as well as business cases. The technology developed by Climeworks captures carbon dioxide directly from the air using machines that are powered solely by renewable energy or energy-from-waste, resulting in grey emissions of below 10%.

Week 6: Women in Sub-Saharan Africa: Energy and Economic Empowerment

Olasimbo Sojinrin, head of operations in Nigeria for Solar Sister, will detail how her company has used solar technologies to create opportunity and economic empowerment for women in Nigeria and Tanzania. Simbo has been a lifelong advocate for young people and women. She has worked as a Director at the Women’s consortium of Nigeria (WOCON), and manager at British Council, leading multiple youth climate change projects, including Connecting Classrooms and Green Clubs. As manager of the UNDP / Bank of Industry Access to Renewable Energy project, she trained policy makers and lead advocacy for a renewable energy policy at Nigeria’s federal and state level. In 2014, Simbo joined Solar Sister as Nigeria Country manager where she leads a network of women entrepreneurs, manages a staff of over 30, and is one of Nigeria’s leading clean energy advocates.
